About the Coalition

Bringing New Mexico Together Around Housing Solutions

New Mexico needs more housing that people can afford—in our cities, our rural communities, and everywhere in between.

The Housing Abundance! Coalition brings together organizations and leaders from across New Mexico to advance practical, research-based policies that help create more homes, make housing more attainable, and expand housing opportunities for New Mexicans.

We believe addressing the state's housing challenges requires collaboration across industries, communities, and perspectives. By bringing stakeholders together around shared priorities, we aim to help policymakers and the public better understand the challenges facing New Mexico's housing market and the solutions that can help move the state forward.

Why Housing Abundance?

When communities do not have enough housing options, the effects reach far beyond the housing market.

Families face difficult choices as housing costs rise. Employers can struggle to recruit and retain workers. Young professionals may find it difficult to remain in the communities where they grew up. Rural communities may have trouble attracting residents and sustaining local economies.

New Mexico needs a housing system that can respond to these needs with more homes, a greater variety of housing options, and opportunities at more attainable price points.

Housing abundance means creating the conditions for communities to build the housing they need. It does not mean prescribing one type of housing or a one-size-fits-all solution. It means identifying practical ways to help communities respond to local needs and expand housing opportunities over time.

A Coalition Built on Collaboration

No single organization, industry, or policy can solve New Mexico's housing challenges alone.

The Housing Abundance! Coalition brings together perspectives from across the housing ecosystem, including housing and construction, real estate, economic development, business, workforce development, and other related sectors.

By sharing expertise and identifying common ground, coalition participants can help develop practical policy ideas that reflect the realities of housing production, financing, infrastructure, taxation, and local government.

Our collaborative approach is designed to:
  • Build a shared understanding of New Mexico's housing challenges.
  • Identify practical, research-based policy solutions.
  • Encourage informed discussion among stakeholders and policymakers.
  • Support public education about the factors that influence housing availability and affordability.
  • Advance a statewide conversation about expanding housing opportunities.

Our Policy Priorities

The coalition focuses on four interconnected areas:

Housing Ready Communities

Making housing development more predictable by improving processes and addressing unnecessary barriers.

Bridge to Housing Attainability

Exploring financing and other tools that can help connect housing production with household affordability.

Reforming Tax Policies That Discourage Housing Creation

Examining how tax policy affects the cost and feasibility of building and maintaining homes.

Rural Housing Development Incentives

Supporting resources and approaches that address the unique challenges of rural housing development.
Together, these priorities provide a framework for continued public education, stakeholder engagement, and policy development.

A Nonpartisan Approach to Housing

Housing affects people across every region, profession, and political perspective. The Housing Abundance! Coalition provides a shared, nonpartisan framework for understanding New Mexico's housing challenges and considering practical solutions.

Our work is focused on education, collaboration, and policy approaches that can help communities produce more housing and create more opportunities for New Mexicans.

The goal is straightforward: help make it possible for more people to find a home that meets their needs and their budget.

Help Move the Conversation Forward

Building a stronger housing future for New Mexico starts with understanding the challenges, sharing ideas, and bringing more voices into the conversation.

Whether you represent an organization, work in a housing-related field, help shape public policy, or simply care about the future of your community, there is a place for you in this conversation.

More housing starts with working together.
